Let's Go on with the Show in Galveston's Historic Opera House
The Grand 1894 Opera House
Just before the turn of the century, Galveston was booming
as a port city, and was becoming a very prosperous place. Its residents decided
that, as befits a great city, Galveston needed a truly great space for the
performing arts. They invested their time and efforts into creating this
beautiful theatre which has stood the test of time and proved the dedication of
the community over and over again. Come to a show at the 1894 Grand Opera
House, the “Official Opera House of Texas!”
History
Built just a few years before the Great Storm of 1900, the
Grand Opera House was privately funded by citizens who cared deeply about the
performing arts. Though the Great Storm did damage the Grand, it’s a testament
to the motivation of the community that the Opera House was quickly restored
and reopened. At its inception, the Grand was a live performing arts venue,
later becoming a vaudeville theatre, then a movie house, and once again a
dedicated performing arts space, after a major renovation in the 1970s. Today,
the Grand’s fascinating Romanesque Revival style, incredible acoustics, and
intimate box-style seating arrangement makes it a great place for residents and
visitors alike to enjoy a world-class performance.
Upcoming Shows
The Grand presents a wide variety of performances
year-round. During the holiday season, they offer classics like The Nutcracker,
with a great addition of a special Nutcracker Afternoon Tea where kids can feel
extra-special and get up close and personal with the performers. National music
tours also land here frequently, with 2019’s lineup including performances from
The Oak Ridge Boys and Pink Martini. There are also performances from the
Galveston Symphony Orchestra about once a month.
But the real heart of the Grand is not music or ballet, so
much as it is live theatre. It’s what the Grand was originally built to do, and
they deliver with style! The Grand offers a diverse slate of plays in 2019,
including “The Other Mozart,” “Jersey Boys,” “Something Rotten,” “Spamalot,”
and “Neil Berg’s 50 Years of Rock and Roll.”
Also, their “Serious Fun” series offers an awesome selection
of plays for the whole family to enjoy! This year, plays include classics like
“The Snow Queen” and “Billy Goats Gruff,” as well as newer fare, such as “Magic
School Bus – Lost in the Solar System,” and “Diary of a Worm, a Spider, and a
Fly.”
Don’t think it’s all about opera: there’s something for
everyone to enjoy here at The Grand Opera House!
