Making the Most of Your April Trip to Galveston
One of the things you’ll love about your April trip to Galveston is there are several big events geared toward children making it a great time to plan a family vacation. If you’re wondering what to do and where to go on Galveston Island, here are our suggestions:
April 9 – Fairy Tale Ball at Moody Mansion, 2618 Broadway.
Yes, here’s your chance for you and the kids to dress up in your favorite costumes for this fundraiser for the Galveston Children’s Museum. As part of this year’s Fairy Tale Ball: Once Upon a Time… at The Castle, staff transforms Moody Mansion and its ground for an evening of “fairytale enchantment” with fun for adults and children. While Forest Fairies entertain the younger guests, the older kids will love the Tween Ball. Tickets are $100 for adults and $25 for children, including dinner. The Fairy Tale Ball is from 5 to 9 p.m. Purchase tickets online.
April 21 – 24 – Featherfest
Now, here’s an excuse to pull out your favorite binoculars and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Featherfest is a four-day festival for serious and casual bird-watchers and nature photographers. Activities include speakers and field trips throughout the island. This festival is the way to enjoy spring migration on Galveston Island. Reserve your spots in advance.
April 23 – ArtWalk
One of the best ways to explore Galveston’s historic downtown is ArtWalk. The Galveston Arts Center presents ArtWalk every six to eight weeks in partnership with galleries, artist studios, and other walls throughout downtown to feature local and regional artists. In addition, many shops and other businesses keep their doors open late for ArtWalk, from 6 to 9 p.m.
April 23 & 24 – Railfest at the Galveston Island Railroad Museum, 123 Rosenberg Avenue.
Calling all train lovers – young and old. Here’s your chance to take a ride on a vintage train, tour restored cars, see model trains, enjoy hands-on activities and live entertainment during Railfest. This two-day event is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, $12 for seniors, $10 for children, and free for children four and under.
April 30 – Grand Kids Fest, Postoffice Street District
Picture four outdoor stages and more than 40 booths with hands-on activities for children of all ages – this is what you can expect at the Grand Kids Fest. The Grand 1894 Opera House also hosts an open audition for Missoula Children’s Theatre that’s performed that day. Activities and entertainment are from 10 to 5 p.m.
Where to Shop and Where to Eat
Every trip to Galveston should include time for shopping and dining. Here are some shops that should be on your list.
Play on The Strand, 2119 Strand
Did you know there’s a toy store on The Strand in Galveston? They offer games, puzzles, and toys for ages. They also have an arcade. It’s worth a peek.
ToLa Mo’ Betta Market, 2208 Strand
Everyone needs a new pair of flip flops for their beach vacation or the perfect hat. You’ll love the variety of their collection of hats, bags, beach totes, tropical-themed clothing, and, of course, flip-flops. Dad can even grab a beer and sit outside while everyone shops.
Nolan’s Downtown Food Park, 2424 Postoffice
Well, there’s a new food truck park in Galveston called Nolan’s downtown food park! Currently, you’ll find Around the Corner specializing in German food and the Galveston Bagel Shop. Check their Facebook page for details on markets and live entertainment.
And, you can’t end the day without house-made ice cream. We suggest LaKing’s Confectionery, 2323 Strand, Hey Mikey’s, 2120 Postoffice, and for gelato, try Mario’s Seawall Italian and Pizzaria, 628 Seawall.
