Making the Most of Your May Trip to Galveston
Don’t you think May is practically summer? Well, not quite, but it’s pretty close. This time of year is always a great time to plan your May trip to Galveston and have a beach house getaway to Galveston Island. If you’re wondering what to do and where to go on Galveston Island while you enjoy your vacation rental, here are our suggestions:
May Events to Add to Your Calendar
May 7 & 8, 14 & 15- Galveston Historic Homes Tour
Here’s a fun fact for you: Galveston has one of the largest, well-preserved, and historically significant concentrations of Victorian architecture in the United States. So if you love historic architecture, design, or just peeking inside someone’s windows as you drive by, add this tour to your list.
May 13 & 14 – Yaga’s Wild Game and BBQ Cookoff
Calling all BBQ lovers! Do not miss the Yaga’s Wild Game and BBQ Cookoff. Cooking teams from all over the region compete for the best fajitas, seafood, chicken, ribs, brisket, and wild game. The cookoff takes place at Pier 21 and benefits Galveston County children’s charities. Enjoy live music, a silent auction, and, of course, the barbecue.
March 27 – July 3 – The Billy Gibbons Texas History Experience at The Bryan Museum
If you love ZZ Top and Billy Gibbons, then make sure you plan a stop at The Bryan Museum, 1315 21st Street, for this special exhibition. The Bryan Museum is working with Billy Gibbons to display some of his personal equipment, and you’ll also learn how some of the most famous lyrics from his music relate to Texas history. How cool is that?
May 21 – 14th Annual Galveston Island Beach Revue
Did you know Galveston’s Pageant of Pulchritude from the 1920s led to the future Miss Universe Pageant? The Galveston Island Beach Revue returns this year to Beach Central, 2102 Seawall Blvd., for a little vintage-inspired fun. Enjoy vintage cars and hot rods, live music, vintage vendors, food, and more, all leading to the highlight event the Bathing Beauty Contest. Vintage wear is encouraged.
Where to Shop and Where to Eat
Here are some suggestions of what should be on your list.
Galveston’s Own Farmer’s Market, 28th and Market
Every Sunday, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., you’ll find a variety of vendors set up at Galveston’s Own Farmer’s Market. In addition to fresh produce, coffee, pastries, and other food items, you’ll often find fresh flowers, handmade soaps, and more. In June, the hours shift from 9 a.m. to noon.
Jennika’s – A Bazaar Place, 2628 Market
Since you’re shopping on what’s known as West Market at the Farmer’s Market, you should also check out Jennika’s. This shop offers fashion, art, unique gifts, and home decor, including some great candles. Plus, the owner creates some of the items sold in the shop too.

This gem of a restaurant offers salads, soups, sandwiches, paninis, and gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options. You’ll also love their desserts. They are open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and closed on Sundays.
