The Galveston Railroad Museum

The Galveston Railroad Museum is home to one of the largest restored railroad collections in the entire nation, making it a fantastic choice for those with an interest in locomotion or niche aspects of history. Over 40 pieces of locomotives and rolling stock can be seen here, as well as a working train and a variety of railroad exhibits and memorabilia.

Moody Mansion

An enormous 28,000 square foot historic 1895 mansion spanning over 30 rooms, the Moody Mansion chronicles the lives of one of the most powerful families in Texas. Go on a self-guided tour, a docent led tour, or a group tour of the home’s 20 dedicated rooms. This Texas museum also houses the Galveston Children’s Museum on the ground floor, though it is a separate museum with a separate admission fee.

The Bryan Museum

Galveston Museums are spectacular and one of the main museums is the Bryan Museum. Housing the most extensive collection of artwork, artifacts, and documents pertaining to the Southwestern United States, the Bryan Museum contains over 70,000 items covering a range of 2,500 years. From ancient Native American cultural items to antique saddles, firearms, maps, and art, this Texas museum is a must for anyone who loves Old West culture and history.

Texas Seaport Museum

Consisting of a comprehensive museum, theater, and a National Historic Landmark, the 1877 tall ship Elissa, the Texas Seaport Museum is an intriguing museum dedicated to documenting and preserving the history of immigration and commerce by sea through the “Ellis Island of the West.”

Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum

Texas is known for its big oil productions, but perhaps less is known about the rigs used to extract this incredibly valuable natural resource. A visit to Galveston provides the perfect opportunity to get an up-close look at an oil rig and learn firsthand how it functions. While the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig is no longer active, it has found new life as an educational center for visitors right in the heart of Galveston.
