Galveston Ferry

Visitors to Galveston Island will be thrilled at the prospect of riding on the Galveston Ferry. The ferry is actually a collection of vessels operated by the Highway Department as a part of State Highway 87, which includes Broadway Avenue and continues on to Bolivar Peninsula. If you’re in Galveston and want to get to Bolivar Peninsula, this is the way to go.

The ferry is designed for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic and runs as often as necessary, depending on traffic. During peak business hours of summer, the ferry can employ up to five vessels, ensuring a shorter wait for passengers.

The Galveston Ferry runs 24 hours a day, so you’ll have no problem including it in your itinerary. While the 2.7 mile trip is only about 18 minutes, it is often one of the more beautiful parts of a trip to Galveston. The ride offers some of the most outstanding views of Galveston Bay, Seawolf State Park, and the Bolivar lighthouse.

When you’re on the journey, don’t forget to look out for bottle-nose dolphins. Many passengers have been blessed with the sight of upwards of thirty dolphins swimming alongside the ferry! There’s really no better way to spend a beautiful day in Galveston.

You’ll have access to more secluded beaches once on Bolivar Peninsula. There are also many miles of marshland, which provide perfect surroundings for bird watching and fishing.
