Congratulations, you are planning on spending time in Galveston during the holidays. As mentioned, the beach and all associated beach activities and watersports are a great option for social distancing on the island. Go for a walk on the beach, build a holiday-themed sandcastle, make sand angels (versus snow angels), go fishing, kayaking, or go for a boat ride. First on the list of attractions is Moody Gardens’ Festival of Lights, One Hope Blvd. Festival of Lights is a long-time holiday tradition. Next, add Moody Mansion & Museum, 2618 Broadway, to your holiday activities. It is always a treat during the holidays. This year, they are reviving their “Christmas through the ages” decorations. Each of their six Christmas trees represent a different era with authentic holiday decorations from that time. Moody Mansion offers a self-guided audio tour and requires masks.
If you love cowboys, The Bryan Museum, 1315 21st Street, is currently featuring a “Saddle-up Cowboy” exhibit through Dec. 6. In addition to the saddle collection that’s typically on display, you’ll see others that are part of their private collection. Plus, if you’re in town on Saturday, Dec.13 at 4 p.m., The Bryan Museum is hosting “Holiday Lights: A Lone Star Christmas Concert.” The museum is limiting capacity and is beautifully decorated for the holidays.
Did you know the Bishop’s Palace, 1402 Broadway, is considered one of the best examples of Victorian architecture in the country. This Galveston landmark is hosting Holiday Tours of the Palace in December in the evenings. Tour capacity is limited. Book your tour in advance.
For those who want to put their artistic talents to work and leave Galveston with their craft or piece of art, check out Clay Cup Studios, 2219 Postoffice. They offer crafts to go or your family can work on a project in the studio. There’s plenty of space to spread out and a variety of ideas to keep you busy including glass fusion, pottery painting, art’tini (paint your own wine glass), canvas painting, and more. And, make sure you do some holiday shopping downtown in the Historic Strand District and Postoffice Street District. Downtown Galveston is filled with locally owned shops and boutiques.
